Mafadi

Mafadi is the highest peak in South Africa, located on the crest of the Drakensberg mountains and forming part of the frontier with Lesotho. The summit reaches roughly 3,450 meters above sea level and is a prominent high-point in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg range.

The area is a trekking destination known for long ridge walks and steep approaches along rocky trails; expected elevation gain and remote terrain make ascents usually require a full day or multi-day hike. Routes are unpaved and marked only by footpaths and cairns, so hikers should be prepared for alpine-style conditions and limited facilities.

Mafadi is a feature of the Drakensberg massif, formed by volcanic basalt capped by erosion-resistant sandstone; it has no permanent settlements and has been used historically for grazing and as a route between highland areas. The peak itself has long been identified as South Africa’s highest point on modern topographic surveys.

The mountain sits on the Drakensberg escarpment on the border between South Africa and Lesotho, within the highland zone of southern Africa. It is reached via mountain trails from lowland access points rather than by road, in a landscape of steep cliffs, plateaux and grassland.
