Main image

Madauros is the site of an ancient Numidian and Roman town near the modern settlement of M’daourouch in Souk Ahras Province, northeastern Algeria. It was an established Roman urban centre by the imperial period and retains visible archaeological remains.

Small-scale excavations and surface remains show a compact Roman townscape with a theatre, baths and funerary monuments; the site is primarily visited for its ruins and epigraphic material. Interpretation is limited on site, so visitors often go with a guide or after consulting published surveys.

The settlement developed under Numidian and then Roman administration and remained occupied through late antiquity, serving as a regional centre and later a Christian bishopric. The town is historically linked to the philosopher and novelist Apuleius, who was born there in the second century.

The ruins sit adjacent to the modern town of M’daourouch in northeastern Algeria, within Souk Ahras Province. The surrounding landscape is semi-arid with cultivated fields and low hills.

  • Apuleius connection: The town is known as the birthplace of the second-century writer Apuleius, who is frequently associated with its Roman-era prominence.
  • Visiting note: Much of the site is exposed and can be visited on foot; bring sun protection and water as there is limited shade.

What to See #

  • Roman theatre and baths: Open-air remains include a Roman theatre, baths and funerary monuments visible across the site; many stone inscriptions and architectural fragments have been recorded by archaeologists.
  • Mausoleums and necropolis: Funerary tumuli and mausoleums from late antiquity mark the cemetery areas around the town; several carved tombstones and stelae are displayed in situ.
  • Forum and urban remains: The urban core preserves traces of streets, foundations and public buildings associated with the Roman colony and later Byzantine occupation.
