Machaquila

Machaquila is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the Petén Department of Guatemala, known for its plazas, a ballcourt and carved stelae. It was a regional centre during the Classic period and features the stone monuments and civic architecture typical of that era.

On-site remains include platform foundations around central plazas, a ballcourt used for ritual sport, and groups of carved stelae bearing iconography and hieroglyphs; many monuments date to the Classic Maya period. Excavations and survey work have documented these elements and their layout within the site core.

The city rose and was occupied mainly during the Classic period (approximately the 3rd to 9th centuries CE) before decline and abandonment in the later Classic/Postclassic phases. Archaeological work has revealed its civic plan and monument program, contributing to understanding of regional political networks in the Petén.

Machaquila is set in the lowland forests of northern Guatemala’s Petén and is reached via local roads from larger Petén centres; infrastructure for visitors is limited compared with major tourist sites.
