How to Get to Machakos
Machakos is reached primarily via Nairobi: Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) is the main international gateway and Wilson handles domestic flights. From Nairobi you continue by matatu, shuttle or taxi along the Nairobi-Machakos routes to reach the town.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO): From NBO (Nairobi) you can take a taxi or airport shuttle to Machakos via the Nairobi-Machakos Superhighway. Taxis typically cost around KES 2,000-3,500 and take 45-70 minutes depending on traffic; shared airport shuttles or private transfers range about KES 800-1,500 and take roughly 50-80 minutes.
Wilson Airport (WIL): Wilson handles domestic flights into Nairobi. From Wilson you take a taxi or matatu into Nairobi city then a direct matatu to Machakos town from Nairobi CBD. Expect a short taxi to the CBD (KES 300-700, 15-30 minutes) then a matatu to Machakos for about KES 100-300 and 40-60 minutes travel time.
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service directly to Machakos. Most long-distance rail (Nairobi-Mombasa SGR) arrives in Nairobi; transfer by road from Nairobi to Machakos by matatu or taxi as above.
Bus / Matatu: Regular matatus and intercounty buses run from Nairobi (pick-up points around Nairobi CBD and along Haile Selassie Ave) to Machakos town.
