How to Get to Maba Town
Maba Town is a smaller town in northern Guangdong; there's no major airport in town, so most visitors arrive via Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) or Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) and continue by rail or long-distance coach to the Shaoguan/Maba area. The nearest major rail hub is Shaoguan Railway Station - from there you'll need a local taxi, bus or minibus for the final leg into Maba.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN): The main international gateway for northern Guangdong. From CAN you can take the Airport Express/metro to Guangzhou South Railway Station (metro + transfer ~30-50 minutes, ~7-15 CNY) then a high-speed train to Shaoguan (see Train card); total travel time to the Shaoguan area is typically 2-3 hours door-to-door depending on connections. Alternatively, intercity coaches from Guangzhou long-distance bus stations serve towns across northern Guangdong; coach travel to the Shaoguan region commonly takes 2-4 hours and costs roughly 40-120 CNY depending on route and coach class.
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX): A second major option for international and regional flights. From SZX you can take metro or airport shuttle into Shenzhen city (30-60 minutes, 10-30 CNY) and then a long-distance coach or rail connection north toward Shaoguan/ northern Guangdong. Expect total travel time to the Maba/Shaoguan area of roughly 3-5 hours depending on connections; coach and train combined fares typically range from about 60-150 CNY.
Train: The broader area is served by China Railway on the Beijing-Guangzhou corridor; Shaoguan is the primary rail hub (Shaoguan Railway Station). High-speed services link Guangzhou South and Shaoguan in about 1-2 hours; second-class seats on G/D services between Guangzhou and Shaoguan commonly cost in the range of ~50-120 CNY. From Shaoguan station you will need a local taxi or bus for the last mile to Maba Town (see Getting Around).
Bus: Long-distance coaches run from Guangzhou (various provincial and city bus stations), Shenzhen and neighbouring county seats to towns across northern Guangdong. Travel times to the Shaoguan/Maba area are typically 2-4 hours from Guangzhou and somewhat longer from Shenzhen; ticket prices commonly fall between ~40-120 CNY depending on distance and coach class. Local county buses and minibuses connect Shaoguan and nearby towns to Maba - frequency can be limited, so check schedules locally and expect to use taxis for off-peak connections.
How to Get Around Maba Town
Maba is best navigated by a combination of intercity rail/coach into the Shaoguan area and taxis or local buses for the final leg; public-transport frequency drops outside peak times. If you need flexibility to reach rural attractions or nearby villages, a hired car or taxis are the most practical choice - walking is ideal only within the small town centre.
- China Railway (high-speed trains) (~50-120 CNY) - High-speed trains are the most reliable way to cover longer distances in Guangdong. Use Guangzhou South or Shenzhen stations to reach Shaoguan on G/D services; journeys to Shaoguan are usually 1-2 hours from Guangzhou South. Expect to buy tickets in advance during holidays; once at Shaoguan station you'll need a taxi or local bus to reach Maba Town.
- Long-distance coach (~40-120 CNY) - Intercity coaches link Guangzhou, Shenzhen and county seats to towns across northern Guangdong. Coaches can be cheaper than high-speed trains for some routes and drop you closer to county bus terminals, but schedules are less frequent and journeys take longer. Buy tickets at major bus stations or via popular Chinese apps; bring cash for small, rural ticket offices.
- Taxi / Didi (Flag ~10-15 CNY; local rides ~20-150 CNY depending on distance) - Taxis (metered) are the most practical way to cover the final miles from Shaoguan station or a bus terminal to Maba Town, especially if services are infrequent. Typical urban flag fares in Guangdong start around 10-12 CNY with per-km increments thereafter; rural fares for longer inter-county jumps will be higher. Didi (ride-hailing) is available in larger towns but may be sparse in rural Maba - have cash ready for local drivers.
- Local buses & minibuses (~2-30 CNY) - County and township buses connect Maba with nearby towns and the Shaoguan area. Frequency can be limited outside peak times; minibuses are flexible but may only run when full. These are the cheapest local option for last-mile travel, but expect basic vehicles and service gaps - useful if you want the lowest-cost way to travel between nearby villages and Maba's centre.
- Car hire / Driving (Rental ~200-500 CNY/day, plus fuel & tolls) - Renting a car is convenient if you plan to explore the rural areas around Maba and northern Guangdong at your own pace. Roads are generally in good condition, but be comfortable driving on regional highways and narrow county roads. Fuel, tolls and parking are additional costs; ensure you have a Chinese driving permit or an authorized rental arrangement.
