Area Karst limestone formations creating dramatic forest-like pillars
Shilin’s Stone Forest in Yunnan presents limestone pillars and karst formations threaded by paths and viewing platforms. Visitors hike the trails, photograph unusual rock pinnacles and sample local Yi minority crafts and snacks.
The Stone Forest (Shilin) in Yunnan province, China, is a large karst limestone formation where erosion has produced tall, pillar-like rocks across a wide area. It is one of the province’s best-known geomorphological attractions and a designated scenic area.
Paths and boardwalks allow visitors to walk among clusters of vertical limestone towers that in places rise many meters above the ground; the formations are grouped into named sections such as the Greater Stone Forest and Naigu Stone Forest. Interpretive routes and viewing platforms direct foot traffic and provide photographic viewpoints.
The formations were created by long-term karst erosion processes and have been a mapped and protected scenic area for several decades, attracting domestic and international visitors. The site lies southeast of Kunming and is commonly visited on day trips from the provincial capital.
Geographically the Stone Forest sits in central-southern Yunnan and is part of a broader karst landscape that extends across the region.

How to Get to Stone Forest #
The Shilin (Stone Forest) Scenic Area is southeast of Kunming in Yunnan province. By road it’s about 80-100 km from central Kunming and typically takes around 1.5-2 hours by car.
Regular coach services and tour buses depart Kunming for the Stone Forest (check Kunming long‑distance bus stations and tour operators for schedules); once you arrive at the Shilin Scenic Area bus stop the main entrances are a short walk or served by local shuttle buses within the park.
Tips for Visiting Stone Forest #
- Arrive at opening or late afternoon to beat the large daytime coach tours and the worst of the midday heat common in Yunnan summers.
- Buy tickets in advance during Chinese national holidays and high season, then use the park shuttles to reach the more distant sections-many visitors never leave the central Naigu area, so walking farther gets you quieter and more dramatic formations.
Best Time to Visit Stone Forest #
Aim for spring or autumn for the most comfortable weather and best visibility among the karst formations; avoid peak Chinese holiday dates if you want fewer crowds.
