Lugu Lake Lake

Lugu Lake is a highland freshwater lake on the border between Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in southwest China. The lake is noted for its clear water, island-dotted surface and surrounding mountain scenery.

The shoreline is home to communities including the Mosuo people, whose matrilineal social practices have attracted ethnographic and tourist interest. Boat travel to islands and lakeside walking are common visitor activities.

The lake and its surroundings have been developed with local roads and modest tourism infrastructure while retaining rural character and traditional settlements. Lugu Lake sits in a mountainous plateau region and is accessed via regional roads from larger regional centres.

On arrival you access the lakeside villages (for example the Mosuo villages) on foot from the lakeside parking areas or village bus stops; short local walks and boat piers are the normal ways to reach viewpoints and the water.

• Plan to be lakeside at sunrise for the best light and the classic misty lake views - many photographers and local tours schedule early launches to capture the scenery and Mosuo cultural activities at dawn.
• Base yourself in one of the lakeshore villages (for example, a local guesthouse near Lige) to access boat services and cultural visits - many boat trips and homestay experiences are organised locally and should be booked a day or two ahead in high season.
• Allow extra time for road travel: approaches to Lugu Lake are mountainous and can be slow, so coordinate onward transport and departure times with local drivers or tour operators rather than assuming rapid connections to larger hubs.
• Respect local Mosuo customs and any village rules when visiting communities around the lake; ask about appropriate behaviour for home visits and photography before taking pictures.
