Lower Antelope Canyon

Lower Antelope Canyon is a narrow slot canyon in Navajo Nation territory near Page, Arizona, renowned for its photogenic, undulating sandstone walls and shafts of sunlight. It is one of the most photographed slot canyons in the American Southwest and a major draw for photographers and tourists.

The canyon’s sinuous sandstone walls rise dramatically and in places narrow to only a few feet, producing banded color and texture that change with the angle of sunlight. Strong vertical beams appear in the upper reaches on sunny days, especially around midday in summer when the sun is high overhead.

Lower Antelope Canyon was carved from Navajo Sandstone by flash floods and wind-driven erosion over thousands of years. The canyon is managed as part of Navajo Nation lands, and commercial access is controlled through licensed local guides.

The canyon sits near the town of Page, Arizona, on Navajo Nation land close to Lake Powell and Glen Canyon; access is via the monument area east of Page.

• Access: All visits take place on guided tours operated on Navajo Nation land and tickets are required in advance during peak season.
• Light and dimensions: Midday in summer produces the strongest vertical light shafts; the canyon's walls narrow to only a few feet in places while rising up to roughly 30-40 meters high.
