Lovćen is a compact mountain range and national park in southwestern Montenegro, notable for its rocky peaks and cultural monuments. The site is most famous for the mausoleum of the 19th-century ruler and poet Petar II Petrović-Njegoš near the summit.
Tourists come for short but steep drives or hikes to panoramic viewpoints that look out over the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding Adriatic coastline. The mausoleum near the top is a primary attraction; visitors can climb a stairway to reach the summit structure and surrounding viewpoints.

How to Get to Lovćen #
From Kotor or Cetinje take the road up toward Njeguši and follow signage for Lovćen National Park and Njegoš Mausoleum; the climb from Kotor is roughly 25-35 minutes by car on a narrow, winding road. Park at the official lot and ascend the stair access to the mausoleum.
Tips for Visiting Lovćen #
- Walk the zigzag path to Njegoš Mausoleum early in the morning to avoid coach tour clusters and to catch the light across the Boka Kotorska.
- The summit is exposed-bring a windproof layer even in summer; the path and steps are carved into the mountain and can be slippery after rain.
- Visit the former royal capital town of Cetinje en route to understand why Lovćen means more than scenery to Montenegrins.
