Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park is a protected forest area on the northeastern edge of Moscow and in Moscow Oblast, named “Elk Island” for its historic moose population. It is one of Russia’s notable urban-adjacent national parks.

Visitors encounter mixed forests, marshes and small rivers with hiking paths and cycle routes that penetrate into quiet woodland within easy reach of the city. Wildlife includes large mammals such as moose and a variety of woodland bird species, with informal recreation areas and lookout points.

The area was set aside for protection in stages during the 20th century and formally designated as a national park to conserve peri-urban forest and wetland ecosystems while providing recreational opportunities for Moscow’s population. Management combines conservation and public access.

The park sits northeast of central Moscow, straddling the boundary between the city and Moscow Oblast; it forms a green belt extending from the city into surrounding lowland forests and wetlands.

• Wildlife viewing: Park entrances and trails are reachable from Moscow's northeastern suburbs; spring and summer are best for birdwatching and seeing moose at dawn or dusk.
