Lorentz National Park
Nature Reserve Vast Indonesian park covering glaciers, mountains, and lowlands
Lorentz National Park in Papua spans coastal mangroves, lowland rainforest and alpine glaciers on Puncak Jaya’s slopes. Visitors come for biodiversity surveys, mountaineering to Carstensz Pyramid and expeditions through remote ecosystems.
Lorentz National Park is a World Heritage property in Papua, Indonesia, covering a very large area that ranges from tropical marine and lowland ecosystems to alpine glaciers and high mountain terrain, and includes the region’s highest peaks.
The park’s outstanding feature is the combination of coastal wetlands, extensive lowland rainforest and high mountain systems culminating in Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid), which reaches the highest elevations in New Guinea and includes equatorial glaciers. This full elevation gradient supports exceptional biodiversity and a range of ecological processes.
The park was established to protect these linked ecosystems and the cultural landscapes of indigenous peoples who inhabit parts of the park; it is notable for its scale and ecological variety and is managed under national conservation frameworks. Access to the interior and high mountains is difficult, often requiring river travel and organised expeditions.
Lorentz National Park occupies a substantial portion of the central mountain and coastal zone of the Indonesian province of Papua on the island of New Guinea, incorporating seaward lowlands and inland mountain ranges.
- Altitudinal range: The park spans a dramatic altitudinal range from mangrove and lowland rainforest up to tropical glaciers, making it one of the most ecologically varied protected areas in the region.
- Access and logistics: Puncak Jaya is a technical climb and access to the high mountains requires permits and specialised logistics; many parts of the park are remote and visited mainly by organised expeditions.
What to See #
- Puncak Jaya / Carstensz Pyramid: High-altitude zone centred on Puncak Jaya (also known as Carstensz Pyramid), the highest mountain in the region with glaciers and alpine terrain that are unusual within a tropical setting.
- Coastal lowlands and lowland rainforest: Vast lowland and coastal ecosystems including mangroves, river systems and tropical rainforest that form part of the park's horizontal range of habitats from sea level to ice fields.
Tips for Visiting Lorentz National Park #
- Plan for the dry season (roughly June-September) when river crossings and trails are most passable and the chance of heavy rain disrupting access is lower.
- Arrange logistics, permits and experienced local guides through Timika or a reputable operator beforehand - Lorentz is extremely large and remote and access typically requires multi-day expeditions by air and river.
- Factor in both highland and lowland sectors when planning your itinerary - the park's value is its range from glaciers to coastline, but visiting multiple zones requires separate, organized transport.
Best Time to Visit Lorentz National Park #
Visit during the drier months (roughly May-October) for more reliable access across the park's lowland and highland areas.
