Main image

The London Mithraeum is a Roman-era Mithraic temple and exhibition located under Walbrook in the City of London, notable for its preserved altars, carved stones and a reconstructed cult chamber. It is one of the most complete examples of a Mithraeum in Britain.

The display combines original archaeological finds with a recreated sanctuary chamber so visitors can see the temple layout and ritual objects. The museum also presents context about Roman London and Mithraic practices.

The temple dates to the Roman period in London and was associated with the cult of Mithras, used by a community of worshippers during the Roman occupation. It was rediscovered in the 20th century and subsequently conserved and re-presented in a purpose-built exhibition space.

The site sits on Walbrook in the financial district of the City of London, a short walk from Bank and Mansion House stations, with entrance through the Bloomberg building’s public gallery.

  • Visiting: The site sits beneath Bloomberg's public exhibition space on Walbrook in the City of London; booking or timed entry is recommended for visitors.
