London Mithraeum
Archaeological Site Underground Roman temple exhibit in London financial district
Reconstructed Roman temple of Mithras beneath Bloomberg’s building in the City, with an exhibition of Roman London finds; visitors come for archaeology and an unusual subterranean museum space.
The London Mithraeum is a Roman-era Mithraic temple and exhibition located under Walbrook in the City of London, notable for its preserved altars, carved stones and a reconstructed cult chamber. It is one of the most complete examples of a Mithraeum in Britain.
The display combines original archaeological finds with a recreated sanctuary chamber so visitors can see the temple layout and ritual objects. The museum also presents context about Roman London and Mithraic practices.
The temple dates to the Roman period in London and was associated with the cult of Mithras, used by a community of worshippers during the Roman occupation. It was rediscovered in the 20th century and subsequently conserved and re-presented in a purpose-built exhibition space.
