Loevestein Castle

Loevestein Castle (Slot Loevestein) is a medieval fortress located in North Brabant, Netherlands, situated at a strategic river junction in the Dutch river delta. It originates from the 14th century and later served as a state prison and historical site.

The preserved keep and ramparts and museum displays that interpret both the castle’s defensive role in controlling river traffic and its use as a prison. The castle is widely known for the 1621 escape of the jurist and writer who was smuggled out in a book chest, an event presented in the site’s interpretation.

Originally built in the medieval period as a fortified stronghold, the structure was adapted over centuries to serve military, administrative and penal functions. Restoration and museum conversion have preserved key buildings and defensive works for public visits.

The castle sits at a confluence of rivers in the Dutch river delta, near towns in North Brabant and accessible from nearby regional centres by road and local ferry services across the waterways.
