Bommelerwaard Area

Bommelerwaard is a river island and agricultural region in the central Netherlands located between the Waal and the Maas (Meuse) rivers in the province of Gelderland. The area is defined by its dikes, polders and river management infrastructure.

A largely low-lying rural landscape with historic market towns, fortified river towns and long straight dike roads suitable for cycling. The floodplain margins and riverbanks provide scenic routes, water-side views and opportunities for birdwatching.

The landscape has been shaped for centuries by river engineering and poldering to control floods and reclaim land for agriculture. Towns in the area developed as river crossings and local trade centres and were historically strategic on the Rhine-Meuse waterways.

Situated between the Waal and Meuse rivers in central Netherlands, Bommelerwaard is administered through local municipalities including Zaltbommel and Maasdriel and lies within the river delta region of Gelderland.

• Cycling and recreation: Extensive cycle routes and quiet country roads make the area popular for cycling and local river-side recreation.

• Use Zaltbommel or neighboring riverside towns as a practical base - both provide easy access to the dike and river paths that define the Bommelerwaard landscape.
• Explore by bicycle along the river dikes and lowland routes early in the morning for better birdwatching opportunities in the floodplain and to avoid weekend day-trip crowds.
• Take the small local ferry crossings and side-dike tracks rather than sticking to main roads - these quieter routes open up panoramic river views and small villages that many visitors bypass.
