Land van Altena Area

Land van Altena is a historical region in the Dutch province of North Brabant, retaining a distinct identity within the modern municipality of Altena. The name refers to a riverine district in the Rhine-Meuse delta with a long agricultural and water-management tradition.

The area is characterized by networks of waterways, dikes and polder farmland and is used for recreational cycling, local boating and day trips through small towns and villages. Outdoor recreation along rivers and protected polder landscapes is the main visitor draw rather than a single monument or attraction.

The region has medieval roots as a local territorial unit and evolved through centuries of Dutch land reclamation and water management; its boundaries and administrative status have shifted over time. The contemporary municipality carrying the Altena name was formed in 2019 through a merger of former municipalities.

Geographically it sits in northern North Brabant in the river delta region of the Netherlands, on low-lying ground shaped by distributaries and tidal rivers. The landscape is predominantly agricultural with scattered villages and a dense local road and cycle path network.
