Loch Garten

Loch Garten is a small freshwater loch in Abernethy Forest, near Boat of Garten in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. It is regionally notable for its conservation work and for a long-running osprey nest monitored by a conservation organisation.

The loch and reserve provide waymarked woodland trails, hides for birdwatching and a staffed visitor area close to the water. The surrounding pine forest supports woodland species including red squirrels and a variety of passerines, and the site is set up for seasonal public access and wildlife viewing.

Conservation management of the loch and adjacent forest has focused on protecting osprey nesting and native woodland habitats in the 20th and 21st centuries. The reserve facilities were developed to provide controlled public access and monitoring.

Situated in Abernethy Forest within the Cairngorms National Park, the loch is close to the village of Boat of Garten and lies in the Speyside region of north‑east Scotland.

• Osprey viewing: a long-established osprey nest on or beside the loch is monitored from hides at the nearby reserve, making spring and summer the best time for nest watching.
• Caledonian pine forest: set inside mature Caledonian pine forest where red squirrels and other woodland birds are regularly seen along the shore and on forest trails.

• RSPB Loch Garten Osprey Centre: seasonal visitor centre and hides run by a conservation organisation, with public car parking and waymarked paths close to the loch shore for bird and nest viewing.
