Cairn Gorm Mountain

Cairn Gorm is a mountain in the Cairngorms massif of the Scottish Highlands and lies within Cairngorms National Park. Its summit reaches 1,245 metres, making it one of the highest and most accessible peaks in the range.

The broad, exposed summit plateau offers panoramic mountain views and high-altitude walking routes suitable for experienced walkers, with a short but steep ascent from nearby car parks. The area supports a developed ski area with lifts and facilities at the Coire Cas side, attracting winter sports users and summer walkers alike.

The slopes around Cairn Gorm were developed for skiing in the 20th century and infrastructure for visitors expanded in later decades. A mountain railway funicular was installed to improve access to the ski area and summit facilities.

The mountain sits in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park in Aberdeenshire/Highland region, roughly 11 kilometres south of Aviemore and within easy reach of the main Highland transport routes.

• For clearer conditions and access to the plateau vegetation, visit Cairn Gorm in late spring to early autumn; winter ascents require winter skills and avalanche awareness and are common only for experienced mountaineers.
• Use the Coire Cas / ski-area car park and visitor facilities near Aviemore as your starting point for the main paths - these give the most direct access to the summit and route information boards.
• Avoid the busiest periods mid-day at peak holiday times by heading up early or later in the afternoon; if you want solitude, head along the less-used ridges beyond the summit plateau rather than the main path to/from the ski area, where most day visitors stay.
