Loch an Eilein

Loch an Eilein is a small freshwater loch in Rothiemurchus Forest near Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. The loch is noted for a wooded setting and a ruined island castle at its centre.

A waymarked circular path runs through mature pine forest around the loch and provides a short forest walk suitable for most visitors, with good opportunities to see woodland birds and red squirrels. The island castle is visible from the shore and is the main historic feature.

The island structure dates to the medieval period and fell into ruin as local power structures changed; the loch and forest have long been part of the Rothiemurchus estate landscape. Modern management focuses on public access, conservation and estate forestry.
