The site has served as Ljubljana’s central marketplace for centuries and was remodelled and architecturally unified by Joe8 Plee8nik in the 1920s and 1930s, who introduced colonnades and covered trading spaces that remain key features.

Ljubljana Central Market sits on the Ljubljanica river beside Prešeren Square in the city centre. From Ljubljana Railway Station and the adjacent Central Bus Station it is an easy 10-20 minute walk (about 1.0-1.5 km) west along Slovenska cesta to the Triple Bridge/Prešeren Square area.

If driving, the market is reached from the A1/A2 approaches into Ljubljana and then onto city streets toward the Old Town; Jože Pučnik Airport (Brnik) is roughly 20-30 km from the centre by road. Several city bus routes stop at or near Prešeren Square (the market’s nearest major stop), from which the stalls are a short walk.
