Lion’s Head is a prominent conical peak in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, rising to 669 meters above sea level. It forms part of the Table Mountain Group and is a well-known landmark within the city.
A clearly defined hiking trail follows the ridge to the summit, offering panoramic views of the City Bowl, the Atlantic Seaboard and Signal Hill. The route is steep in places with short sections of chains and ladders; many walkers time ascents for sunrise or full-moon hikes. The slopes and nearby Signal Hill are frequently used for short recreational outings and informal paragliding launches.
The peak is geologically part of the same sandstone formation as Table Mountain and has long been a recognizable feature on Cape Town’s skyline. The local name derives from the mountain’s resemblance to a crouching lion when seen from certain angles.
Lion’s Head sits between Table Mountain and Signal Hill on the edge of Cape Town’s City Bowl, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the suburbs of Sea Point and Camps Bay. It is immediately adjacent to the central city and is reached from several trailheads in the urban area.
