Lingyin Temple
Religious Site One of China's largest Buddhist temples near Hangzhou
Outside Hangzhou, Lingyin Temple sits in a wooded valley with historic halls, rock-cut grottoes and Buddhist statues; pilgrims and tourists pair temple visits with nearby tea plantations.
Lingyin Temple is a major Buddhist monastery in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, originally founded in 328 CE. It is one of the region’s oldest and most important Buddhist sites.
The temple complex contains multiple halls, courtyards and pavilions and is set against wooded hills, offering a compact but architecturally varied site to explore. The adjacent Feilai Feng limestone ridge features numerous rock-cut Buddhist carvings created between roughly the 10th and 14th centuries. Key interior spaces include the Mahavira Hall and several subsidiary prayer halls, as well as cloisters and ancient cypress trees that punctuate the courtyards.
Lingyin was established by the Indian monk Huili in 328 CE during the Eastern Jin period and developed over many centuries through successive dynasties. The complex has been rebuilt and expanded repeatedly and has long functioned as an active monastic center and pilgrimage destination.
The temple sits in northwestern Hangzhou near the West Lake scenic area, tucked into a valley beneath the Feilai Feng ridge within Zhejiang province. It is accessible by road from Hangzhou city and is a short drive from the city’s main tourist districts.
- Feilai Feng carvings: The grottoes at Feilai Feng contain numerous rock-carved Buddhist images created across several medieval Chinese dynasties, and they sit immediately adjacent to the temple grounds.
- Best time to visit: Early mornings and weekdays reduce crowding; the site is well served by buses and taxis from central Hangzhou.
What to See #
- Feilai Feng (Flying Peak) rock carvings: A cluster of ancient rock carvings and grottoes located on the limestone outcrop immediately west of the temple, with works dating largely from the Song to Yuan periods and depicting Buddhist figures and donors.
- Mahavira Hall (Main Hall): The main worship hall of the complex, serving as the temple's principal ceremonial space and housing the primary Buddha image for major services.
- Hall of the Heavenly Kings: A traditional gate hall at the temple entrance that contains guardian figures and marks the transition from the outer courtyard into the inner temple complex.
How to Get to Lingyin Temple #
From Hangzhou city center or West Lake, take bus routes 7, Y2, or tourist shuttle buses that stop at Lingyin Temple. A 15-20 minute taxi ride from West Lake attractions is common; the temple is well-signposted in English and Chinese.
Tips for Visiting Lingyin Temple #
- Arrive early (before 8:30am) to see the main halls and avoid the mid-morning coach crowds that descend from Hangzhou.
- Don't skip the Feilai Feng grottoes immediately west of the temple - their stone Buddhas are carved into limestone outcrops and are often quieter than the main complex.
- Respect monastic practice: photography inside active worship areas may be restricted and modest dress is appreciated.
