The West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou is a historic lakeside ensemble in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, celebrated for classical Chinese garden design and its influence on landscape aesthetics. The site comprises the lake, islands, causeways, temples and gardens that have been shaped over many centuries.

The site is characterised by scenic causeways, ornamental islands, temple complexes, pagodas and classical gardens arranged to combine water, mountain views and designed plantings. Popular highlights include historic causeways, traditional bridges and lakeside pavilions used for boating, walking and viewing.

The West Lake landscape evolved over centuries, with major shaping and garden design developments occurring under successive dynasties. Many of the existing garden layouts, pagodas and garden features reflect continuous modification from medieval times into the modern era.

The West Lake area sits within central Hangzhou city in Zhejiang province, set in an urban parkland around the lake and close to historic city neighbourhoods.

Hangzhou’s city center is adjacent to West Lake. From Hangzhou East Railway Station take the metro Line 1 to West Lake (Longxiangqiao or West Lake Cultural Square stations) or take a short taxi ride (10-20 minutes depending on traffic). The lakeside is extensively pedestrianised and well served by public transport.
