The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is a long rectangular reflecting basin on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., aligned between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument and built in the early 1920s. It is a formal landscape feature designed to frame views across the Mall.

The basin is notable for its long, mirror-like surface that frames the Lincoln Memorial at one end and the Washington Monument at the other; the pool measures roughly two thousand feet in length and over a hundred feet in width. The pool area is bordered by tree-lined promenades and is a frequent backdrop for ceremonies, protests and public photography.

The pool was constructed as part of the broader National Mall plan in the early 20th century and has undergone periodic maintenance and restoration work to preserve its structure and water quality. It has been maintained as a major component of the Mall’s monumental core since its construction.

The reflecting pool occupies the central axis of the western National Mall in northwest Washington, D.C., directly adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial and with the Washington Monument to the east; it is accessible on foot from nearby memorials and museum entrances.

• Best viewing times: Best light for photos is early morning and at sunset when the pool produces clear reflections of the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument.
• Layout and access: The pool is shallow and long, giving a strong east-west reflection axis between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument; path access runs along both sides.

From the Metro, the closest station is Foggy Bottom-GWU (Blue, Orange, Silver lines), about a 12-20 minute walk along Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street NW. The Smithsonian (Orange/Blue/Silver) and Federal Triangle (Blue/Orange) stations are also walkable from the Mall but slightly farther.

If driving, approach via Independence Avenue or Constitution Avenue; on-street parking is extremely limited and metered. Several guided and hop-on/hop-off buses stop along the Mall. Expect to walk 5-20 minutes from parking or transit to reach the pool depending on which Monument or Mall attraction is the arrival point.

• Go at sunrise on a weekday for mirror-flat water and far fewer people; the best light is roughly 30-45 minutes after dawn in summer.
• Use the steps of the Lincoln Memorial (west end) for the classic view - locals still stand on the lowest step and take the exact same photo they did in 1963.
• Avoid the northeast side near the Korean War Veterans Memorial at midday when tour groups cluster; walk the full length to notice the erosion grooves worn into the granite coping by decades of feet.
