Limes Tripolitanus

The Limes Tripolitanus is the name given to the Roman frontier system and associated frontier settlements on the southern edge of Roman Tripolitania in what is now northwestern Libya. The frontier comprised a network of forts, watchtowers, roads and agricultural sites intended to control movement and protect the coastal provinces from raids.

Visible remains today are fragmentary and include fort ruins, short stretches of defensive works and ruined rural installations; the frontier zones were also associated with veteran colonies and fortified farms that exploited local water and soil through irrigation. Archaeological vestiges are dispersed across the Tripolitanian plateau and bordering highlands rather than forming a single continuous wall.

The frontier was established and developed during the Roman imperial period, principally from the 1st to the 3rd centuries AD, and underwent episodes of repair and reorganization in later antiquity as Roman control waxed and waned.

The Limes Tripolitanus lies inland from the Mediterranean coast of Libya, south of Roman coastal sites such as Leptis Magna and Sabratha and within the broader Tripolitanian plateau; the area referenced by the provided coordinates sits in the west of modern Libya, roughly 460 km southwest of the capital, Tripoli.
