Liceu

The Gran Teatre del Liceu, commonly called the Liceu, is Barcelona’s historic opera house on La Rambla in the Ciutat Vella district, first opened in 1847. It has been the city’s main venue for large-scale opera, ballet and classical music performances since the 19th century.

The theatre’s interior includes a richly appointed auditorium with tiers of boxes, public foyers and exhibition spaces that are presented on guided tours. Regular season programming covers opera productions, concerts and visiting ensembles, while the building also hosts special events and cultural activities.

The theatre’s history includes periods of destruction and rebuilding; significant restoration work followed a major fire in 1994 and allowed the venue to continue as an active cultural institution. Over its life the Liceu has reflected Barcelona’s civic and cultural development.

Situated on La Rambla, the theatre is centrally located in Barcelona’s historic core and is within walking distance of other civic landmarks and public transport nodes.
