About Libreville

Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon, serving as the country’s principal administrative, economic and transport hub. The settlement was established in the mid 19th century for freed slaves, a fact reflected in its French name which means “Freetown”.

The city contains government institutions, commercial ports and urban neighbourhoods along the estuary, with coastal promenades, markets and cultural facilities that attract most visitors. Nearby coastal amenities including beaches on the Pointe-Denis peninsula are frequently visited by both residents and tourists.

Libreville grew under French colonial administration into Gabon’s main port and administrative center and retained that role after independence in 1960. It remains the principal gateway for air and sea travel into the country.
