Why Visit Lhoka? #
High in Tibet’s Yarlung Valley, Lhoka (Shannan) is prized for its ancient palaces and monastic centers such as Yumbu Lakhang and Samye Monastery, sites that draw pilgrims and history lovers. Mani walls and prayer flags thread the landscape; yak butter tea and barley tsampa are everyday tastes that give a sense of local life. Quiet valleys and pilgrimage routes offer cultural immersion more than tourist spectacle.
Who's Lhoka For?
Lhoka (Shannan) centres on the Yarlung Valley and Yamdrok/Tsangpo tributaries - rice terraces, rivers and highland pastures. Samye Monastery and valley viewpoints offer spectacular sunrise and valley panoramas for nature lovers interested in Tibetan landscapes.
There are accessible hikes and cultural treks around Yumbu Lhakhang, the Lhoka valley and routes toward Namcha Barwa’s foothills. Trek logistics are simple from Tsedang; altitudes are moderate but still require good preparation.
Quiet monasteries, riverfront sunsets and guesthouses in Tsedang and nearby villages make Lhoka a calm, reflective choice for couples seeking scenic walks, shared cultural visits and peaceful evenings away from larger Tibetan towns.
Tibetan home cooking in Lhoka includes yak butter tea, tsampa and hearty stews. Small teahouses and family guesthouses serve authentic local fare - simple, warming food that reflects valley agriculture and barley traditions.

How to Get to Lhoka
Most visitors reach Lhoka (Shannan prefecture / Tsetang) by flying into Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA) or by rail to Lhasa Railway Station and then continuing overland. There is no railway station in Tsetang itself, so final access is by bus, taxi or private transfer from Lhasa or nearby airports.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA): The main airport serving Shannan (Lhoka) prefecture, located in Gonggar County. From Gonggar you can take the airport shuttle bus into Lhasa city (roughly 50-60 CNY, about 1-1.5 hours) and then connect onward to Tsetang/Lhoka by intercity bus or taxi. Direct taxis or private transfers from Gonggar to Tsetang are commonly available (roughly 200-400 CNY, about 1-1.5 hours) and are the fastest door-to-door option.
Nyingchi Mainling Airport (LZY): A secondary airport to the east (useful if your itinerary continues eastward). Road connections from Nyingchi to Shannan/Lhoka are long and infrequent; expect a multi-hour drive if you choose to travel overland (typically several hundred CNY and many hours). Nyingchi is not the convenient choice if Lhoka/Tsetang is your primary destination.
Train: There is no rail station in Tsetang/Lhoka; the nearest major rail hub is Lhasa Railway Station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. If you arrive by train in Lhasa, you can transfer by taxi or intercity bus to Tsetang - see the bus/taxi options below. Trains to Lhasa arrive at Lhasa Railway Station; plan onward connections from there.
Bus: Regular intercity buses and coaches link Lhasa and Tsetang (Lhoka) from Lhasa’s bus stations and transport hubs; typical fares are modest (roughly CNY 20-60) and the journey takes about 2-3 hours depending on road and weather. Within the Shannan area local buses and mini-coaches run between towns; fares are low but schedules can be sparse, so check departure points locally.
How to Get Around Lhoka
Getting around Lhoka is best done by a mix of intercity bus for budget travel and taxis or private transfers for speed and convenience. Local buses and walking cover short trips inside towns, but expect fewer frequent services and plan connections through Lhasa or Gonggar Airport when arriving.
- Intercity bus (20-60 CNY) - Intercity buses connect Lhasa and Tsetang and are the budget option for getting into Lhoka. Buses depart from Lhasa's main bus stations and take roughly 2-3 hours depending on conditions. Fares are low (typically CNY 20-60), but services can be less frequent than in lowland China and seats can fill for popular travel days.
- Taxis & Private car (200-400 CNY) - Taxis and private transfers are the most convenient way to reach Tsetang from Gonggar Airport or Lhasa; a direct taxi from Gonggar to Tsetang offers door-to-door service and saves transfers. Expect higher fares for long intercity trips (typically a few hundred CNY) - agree the price up front for long journeys outside the city or ensure the meter is used where available.
- Airport shuttle (50-60 CNY) - Gonggar Airport runs shuttle/coaches into Lhasa; these are a reliable, lower-cost option than a taxi for reaching the regional transport hubs. The shuttle to Lhasa takes about 1-1.5 hours and costs roughly CNY 50-60. From Lhasa you can catch an onward bus or taxi to Tsetang.
- Local buses & minibuses (1-10 CNY) - Inside Tsetang and the wider Shannan prefecture, local buses and minibuses are the cheapest way to get around between nearby villages and towns. Schedules are informal and signage may be limited; ask at your hotel for departure points and times. Fares are generally very low (a few CNY) but services can be crowded and slow.
- Cycling / Scooter (Variable) - Cycling is possible for short distances around Tsetang and scenic nearby areas, but be mindful of altitude and variable road surfaces. Rental availability is limited compared with major Chinese cities; if you plan to cycle, acclimatize first and avoid long climbs on thin air.
- Walking - Tsetang's town centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot; walking is the best way to visit local markets, monasteries and riverside areas. High altitude means take it slow, drink water, and allow extra time for climbs and acclimatization.

Nightlife in Lhoka #
Lhoka (Shannan) in Tibet is a region of monasteries, pilgrimage routes and daytime cultural sites; there’s almost no conventional nightlife. Evenings are quiet - a few hotel lounges or tea houses may stay open, and local gatherings center on communal meals or prayer halls rather than bars or clubs. Practical tips: expect very early closing times, respect religious practices and dress conservatively, and factor in altitude when planning any evening activity. For any real ‘nightlife’ options you’ll need to travel to larger Tibetan cities such as Lhasa.
