Leyte is a large island in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, divided between several provinces and known for a mix of coastal plains, upland interior, and busy port cities. It is an important agricultural and transport hub in the central Philippines.

Extensive coastal scenery and diving sites, the long San Juanico Bridge that connects Leyte to Samar (about 2.16 kilometers), and historic sites linked to the 1944 Allied landings and naval operations. Tacloban City is the island’s principal urban center and gateway for visitors.

Leyte was the site of major World War II operations in 1944 when Allied forces conducted amphibious landings to retake the Philippines; the Battle of Leyte Gulf occurred nearby during that campaign. Since the war the island’s towns and infrastructure have developed into regional centers for commerce and transport.

Geographically Leyte lies in the Eastern Visayas between Samar to the north and the islands of the central Philippines to the west and southwest. Tacloban sits on the northeastern coast and functions as the main port and airport access point for the island.

  • WWII history: Several World War II sites and memorials mark the island, most notably locations associated with the 1944 Allied landings and the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
