Letoon is an ancient Lycian sanctuary near Xanthos in southwestern Turkey, dedicated to the goddess Leto and her children Apollo and Artemis and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sanctuary contains substantial remains from the Classical and Hellenistic periods and was an important religious centre in ancient Lycia.
The archaeological remains include the foundations of three temples, a sacred pool and numerous inscriptions and reliefs; the compact arrangement of monuments allows visitors to walk the main features in a short circuit. Stonework visible on site dates mainly from the 5th to 2nd centuries BCE, with later Roman-period additions and restorations.
Letoon was built and used by Lycian cities and communities from the Classical period onward as a regional religious centre; it continued in use into the Roman era and was documented by travellers and archaeologists from the 19th century onwards. Excavations and conservation work over the 20th century uncovered temple foundations, inscriptions and votive material that established the site’s identification.
The site lies a short distance inland from the modern coastal plain near the village of Kumluova, adjacent to the ruins of Xanthos in southwestern Turkey. Letoon is accessed by road from the Fethiye and Kaş region and lies within the broader coastal landscape of ancient Lycia.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside Xanthos for its archaeological and historical importance.
- Visit length: Small site footprint makes a thorough visit possible in about 1-2 hours, often combined with a visit to nearby Xanthos.
What to See #
- Temple group: A compact group of three main temple foundations and associated altars and retaining walls dating from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, the largest temple is commonly identified with the cult of Leto.
- Sacred pool: A sacred pool and springs that were the focus of ritual activity at the sanctuary; the pool lies immediately in front of the temple area and is preserved as an archaeological feature.
- Inscriptions and reliefs: Epigraphic fragments and rock-cut funerary and votive inscriptions in Lycian and Greek that were found at the site, giving key evidence for Lycian religion and administration.
Tips for Visiting Letoon #
- Visit early in the morning to avoid midday heat and the tour-group rush; the ruins and surrounding wetlands are quieter and the lighting is better for photography at that time.
- Combine Letoon with nearby Xanthos - the two ancient sites are adjacent and are commonly visited together, so plan for both on the same trip to make the most of travel time.
- Take the short walk from the car park along the designated paths and river embankments - many visitors miss the tranquil riverside setting and birdlife by rushing straight to the main ruins.
Best Time to Visit Letoon #
Visit in spring or autumn to avoid peak summer heat while enjoying comfortable conditions for exploring the ruins.
