Lesbos
Island Aegean island known for olive production and archaeology
A Greek island in the North Aegean, Lesbos hosts olive groves, ouzo distilleries in Plomari, the Petrified Forest and seaside villages like Molyvos for traditional tavernas and beaches.
Lesbos (Lesvos) is a Greek island in the northeastern Aegean Sea and one of the largest islands in the region, known for its long history and agricultural economy. The island’s area is roughly 1,600 square kilometres and it has a historically significant population and urban centre at Mytilene.
The island offers coastal villages, sandy beaches, olive groves and small towns rather than single iconic monuments. Key visitor focuses include the capital Mytilene, the northern port town Molyvos (Mithymna), and the fossil remains of the Lesvos Petrified Forest near Sigri on the west coast. People also travel for local food and drink specialties such as olive oil and ouzo.
Lesbos has been inhabited since antiquity and is associated with the archaic Greek poet Sappho (6th century BCE). Over the centuries the island was part of Byzantine and later Ottoman domains before becoming part of modern Greece in the early 20th century.
The island lies in the northeastern Aegean Sea, close to the western coast of Anatolia, and is administratively part of the North Aegean region of Greece. The main harbour and urban centre is Mytilene on the southeast coast.
