Lepcis Magna: Hadrianic Baths

The Hadrianic Baths at Leptis Magna are a large Roman bathing complex on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, constructed during the Hadrianic period in the early 2nd century CE.

Remains include the layout of successive bathing halls, service areas and the hypocaust heating system, with visible masonry, paved areas and mosaic fragments that illustrate the scale and engineering of a major urban bath complex. The baths form a prominent element within the broader ancient city fabric of Leptis Magna and are among the site’s best-preserved monumental structures.

The complex was built as part of an early 2nd century program of urban building under Roman imperial patronage and later experienced decline and partial collapse over succeeding centuries. It retains archaeological evidence for Roman construction techniques and later phases of repair and alteration.

The baths lie inside the Leptis Magna archaeological zone near the modern town of Khoms (al-Khums) on Libya’s Mediterranean coast, within the extensive remains of the ancient city.
