Le Morne Brabant
Mountain Dramatic basaltic peninsula and UNESCO slavery memorial
Le Morne Brabant rises from Mauritius’s southwestern coast and is a UNESCO Cultural Landscape commemorating runaway slaves; hikers reach a summit plateau for coastal panoramas and nearby kite-surfing beaches.
Le Morne Brabant is a basaltic peninsula and steep-sided monolith at the southwest tip of Mauritius, rising sharply from a narrow coastal plain. It is both a natural landmark and a cultural landscape recognized for its association with maroon communities and resistance to slavery.
The site includes a well-marked hiking route to the summit and coastal lagoons and beaches that are used for recreation and water sports. The summit affords broad views over the surrounding reef and coastline.
Historically the site served as a refuge for escaped slaves (maroons) in the 18th and 19th centuries, and this cultural association led to its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
Le Morne sits on the southwestern coast of Mauritius within Riviere Noire District, adjacent to resort areas and accessible by road from coastal towns.
- Height: The monolith reaches a height of about 556 metres above sea level and is a prominent landmark on Mauritius's southwestern coast.
What to See #
- Le Morne summit: The summit of the basalt promontory is reached by a marked trail and provides panoramic views over lagoon waters and the surrounding coastal plain.
- Le Morne lagoon and beaches: The sheltered lagoon and surrounding reef offer shallow-water snorkeling and are fringed by beach resorts that use the site as a recreational base.
How to Get to Le Morne Brabant #
Le Morne Brabant is on the southwest coast of Mauritius near the village of Le Morne. It is reached by car or taxi from major centres (Port Louis and coastal resort areas); from most coastal resorts the drive is a short to moderate journey and there is parking at the base of the mountain where marked trails begin. The main trail to the summit starts at the official trailhead near Le Morne village and involves a steep hike - use the designated car park and visitor information at the trail start.
Tips for Visiting Le Morne Brabant #
- Start the Le Morne Brabant hike at dawn from the official western trailhead to reach the summit for sunrise and to avoid the prevailing afternoon winds that can make the final ridge exposed and slippery.
- Consider a guided cultural walk to understand the site's history as a runaway‑slave refuge-guides point out interpretive sites and viewpoints that many independent hikers miss.
- If you plan water activities in the lagoon (kiting, surfing), check local conditions and operator schedules first; combining a morning summit with afternoon lagoon activities is common but depends on wind and tide.
