Lawachara National Park is a protected forest in Kamalganj Upazila, Moulvibazar District, Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. The park covers approximately 1,250 hectares and preserves one of the region’s last sizeable patches of semi-evergreen tropical forest.
Trails and short boardwalks give access to forest interior habitats and lookout points; the park contains marked walking paths and areas used for long-term ecological research. Wildlife highlights include the western hoolock gibbon and a mix of primates and forest birds, with best wildlife activity in early morning. Facilities are basic but include a research/visitor station and interpretive information at trailheads.
The area was declared a national park in 1996 under the Bangladesh Forest Department to protect remnant rainforest and associated wildlife. Since designation it has been used for conservation, ecological research, and limited eco-tourism while surrounding land remains largely agricultural and tea plantations.
The park sits in northeastern Bangladesh’s Sylhet Division within Moulvibazar District. It lies inland from the Sylhet plain in a landscape of tea estates and hills; the nearest well-known town is Sreemangal in the same district.

How to Get to Lawachara National Park #
From Sylhet city: take a bus or private car to Kamalganj/Srimangal (about 1.5-2 hours). From Srimangal town the park is a short 10-20 minute drive; motorbikes and auto-rickshaws are common. The main entrance is signposted near the village of Lawachara.

- Arrive at sunrise to hear the gibbons - morning is when the forest comes alive and visibility on the trails is best.
- Hire a registered local guide at the visitor center; guides know where to find Hoolock gibbons and rare birds and they help minimize disturbance.
- Walk the boardwalks and canopy trails slowly; the best sightings come to those willing to stand quietly and let the forest reveal itself.

Late autumn through winter (November-February) is the best time for comfortable weather and wildlife activity; monsoon months bring lushness but also more difficult trail conditions.
