Main image

Launceston Castle is a Norman-era fortress in the town of Launceston in Cornwall, England, founded soon after the Conquest in the late 11th century. It occupies a prominent hill above the town and served as an administrative and defensive center for the area.

The castle was established by the Normans as a regional stronghold and administrative centre; over the medieval period it was expanded and later adapted for other uses including administration and detention. Its military importance declined over time and it now survives as a historical ruin.

Located centrally in Launceston in northeast Cornwall, the castle sits on a hill that dominates the town and is within walking distance of the town centre and local amenities.

  • Management and access: English Heritage manages the site and it is an accessible ruin with information panels about its Norman origins and later uses.

What to See #

  • Castle structure: The castle retains a motte-and-bailey layout with surviving stone gatehouse and curtain wall sections, sited on a central hill above the town.
  • Viewing point: The hilltop position provides panoramic views across Launceston and the surrounding Cornish countryside, useful for surveys and interpretation.
