Launceston Castle
Castle Medieval Norman castle overlooking Launceston town, Cornwall
Above Cornwall’s town, Launceston Castle preserves a Norman keep and curtain walls; visitors come for medieval masonry and town-viewing walks.
Launceston Castle is a Norman-era fortress in the town of Launceston in Cornwall, England, founded soon after the Conquest in the late 11th century. It occupies a prominent hill above the town and served as an administrative and defensive center for the area.
The castle was established by the Normans as a regional stronghold and administrative centre; over the medieval period it was expanded and later adapted for other uses including administration and detention. Its military importance declined over time and it now survives as a historical ruin.
Located centrally in Launceston in northeast Cornwall, the castle sits on a hill that dominates the town and is within walking distance of the town centre and local amenities.
- Management and access: English Heritage manages the site and it is an accessible ruin with information panels about its Norman origins and later uses.
