Plymouth Naval Memorial Monument
War memorial commemorating naval personnel lost at sea
War memorial on the Hoe commemorating Royal Navy personnel lost in the World Wars; visited for remembrance, naval history and views across Plymouth Sound.
Plymouth Naval Memorial is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission monument on Plymouth Hoe that commemorates Royal Navy and associated naval personnel lost at sea with no known grave during the two world wars. The memorial lists names on stone panels and serves as a site for remembrance and commemorative events.
The structure consists principally of inscribed panels set in a prominent position on the Hoe so it is visible from the seafront; plaques and annual services mark major remembrance dates. The memorial is one of three principal naval memorials in the United Kingdom that record seafarers lost without a grave.
The memorial stands on the eastern side of Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound, close to other maritime landmarks such as Smeaton’s Tower, and is accessible to the public year-round for quiet reflection and ceremonies.
The site is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is a maintained focus for local and national acts of remembrance.
