Larnaca Salt Lake

Larnaca Salt Lake is a group of seasonal salt pans and shallow lakes located on the outskirts of Larnaca in southern Cyprus. The lakes are saline for much of the year and are an important wetland for waterbirds.

Large numbers of migratory and wintering birds use the lakes, including flocks of greater flamingo at certain times of year, and the site is recognised for its value to bird conservation. Walkways and viewpoints at the edge of the salt flat allow short visits and birdwatching.

Salt extraction and traditional salt-working took place historically across the pans; the area is now managed with conservation measures to balance recreation and bird habitat protection. The lakes lie immediately west of Larnaca city and adjacent to the coastal road and airport area.

Geographically the salt lake complex sits on the coastal plain near Larnaca, separated from the sea by a narrow coastal strip; the urban edge of Larnaca is a short distance to the east and the main international airport is nearby.

• Flamingo season: Large numbers of greater flamingos and other waterbirds gather on the lakes in winter; the best viewing period for flamingos is generally from late autumn through early spring.
• Location and access: The salt flats lie close to Larnaca city centre and Larnaca International Airport, making the site easy to reach for short nature visits and birdwatching stops.
