Northern Highlands (Luang Prabang, Phongsaly, Oudomxay)
March turns noticeably warmer, especially by late month, and humidity starts to build - the highlands feel hot in the lower valleys while higher trails remain cooler. This is the tail end of the dry season so trails are dusty; it’s a popular time for cultural visits before the rain, but expect more visitors in Luang Prabang. Carry sun protection for daytime temple walks and light rain gear just in case of isolated afternoon clouds.
Xiangkhouang Plateau / Plain of Jars (Phonsavan)
March brings a warming trend on the plateau; afternoons become hot in exposed spots while mornings stay comfortable, making for long days of sightseeing. Agricultural activity increases as fields are readied for the monsoon, so expect dusty roads and the occasional festival or market day in Phonsavan. If you’re sensitive to heat, schedule outdoor walking for mornings and late afternoons and carry sun protection and water.
Central Lowlands & Vientiane Region (Vientiane, Vang Vieng, the Mekong plain)
March brings a noticeable warming trend; Vientiane gets hot in the afternoons while mornings stay comfortable, which is perfect for temple visits and rooftop cafés. Roadside vendors start serving cooling treats, and cave tours around Vang Vieng are pleasant before the heavy rains begin. Pack sun protection and light, breathable clothing-late-afternoon siestas become tempting for many travelers.
Bolaven Plateau & Southern Highlands (Pakse, Tad Fane, coffee country)
March begins to warm up in lower parts of the plateau while higher trails remain comfortable, and the area starts to feel less crowded as some travelers move to the coast or islands. Local villages prepare for the coming rains and early afternoon thermals can kick up, making mid-day outdoor work or travel more tiring. Bring sun protection for daytime tours and a thin layer for cooler mornings.
Lower Mekong & 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don, Khong, Don Det/Don Khon)
March sees heat building across the islands, and low water levels make some smaller river routes shallower-locals adjust boat schedules accordingly. Daytime temperature climbs make mid-day siestas appealing; evenings on Don Khong and Don Det are pleasant for outdoor dining along the riverbanks. If planning long boat transfers, book early as services are busier in the lead-up to Pi Mai.
