Lankaran International Airport (LLK): Lankaran’s own airport is a short drive from the city centre (about 5-8 km). Taxis from the airport to central Lankaran typically take 10-20 minutes; expect around 5-12 AZN depending on negotiation and luggage. There is no frequent dedicated airport shuttle; if arriving on a scheduled flight check with your carrier or hotel for transfers.
Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Baku (GYD): Baku’s main international airport is the usual entry point for most international travellers. From GYD you can catch a domestic flight to Lankaran when available, or travel onward by train or long-distance bus (see Train & Bus card) - domestic flights take about 1 hour when scheduled and fares vary widely (often 40-120 AZN one-way), while overland options take roughly 4.5-6 hours.
Train: Lankaran is served by Azerbaijan Railways at Lankaran railway station (Lənkəran). Trains connect Lankaran with Baku and other cities; travel time to Baku is typically around 6-8 hours depending on service. Ticket prices vary by class and route but expect roughly 8-25 AZN one-way for standard seats or reserved sleeping berths on overnight services.
Bus / Marshrutka: Regular intercity buses and shared minibuses (marshrutkas) link Lankaran with Baku, Astara and other regional centres. Buses to Baku take about 4.5-6 hours depending on traffic; fares are commonly in the 10-20 AZN range for intercity coaches. Local minibuses and buses serve short hops around the district - fares inside the city are small (see Getting Around).
How to Get Around Lankaran
Lankaran is best navigated with a mix of local buses or taxis for short hops and trains or intercity buses for longer journeys to Baku and the south. For most visitors, a taxi or a booked coach between cities combined with walking inside town gives the best balance of convenience and cost.
- Taxis (3-10 AZN) - Taxis are the most convenient way to get around Lankaran, especially for airport transfers or trips to nearby attractions such as Hirkan National Park. Negotiate a fare up front or ask your hotel to call a car; short in-town fares commonly range between 3-10 AZN. Expect drivers to accept cash only; receipts are uncommon.
- Azerbaijan Railways (Train) (8-25 AZN) - Trains are comfortable for longer journeys (for example to Baku) and you can book tickets at stations or online via Azerbaijan Railways. Lankaran railway station handles regional and long-distance services; travel to Baku typically takes 6-8 hours depending on the service and stops. Bring water and snacks for longer trips; reserved seats and sleeping berths are available on overnight runs.
- Intercity Bus / Marshrutka (10-20 AZN) - Coaches and marshrutkas run frequently between Lankaran and other cities on the southern route (Baku, Astara, etc.). Buses to Baku generally take about 4.5-6 hours; marshrutkas can be faster but less comfortable. Book long‑distance coach tickets at bus stations or through local agents; fares are typically 10-20 AZN one-way.
- Local Buses & Minibuses (0.30-1 AZN) - Within Lankaran District, local buses and minibuses cover the town and nearby villages. Fares are low and geared to residents - expect small cash fares (often under 1 AZN) for short hops. Services can be informal and may not follow a strict timetable, so ask locals or your accommodation for the best routes and stops.
- Car Rental (35-80 AZN/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility to explore the Lankaran region (coastal roads, tea plantations, Hirkan forests). Rental desks are available in larger cities; expect to pay a daily rate and provide ID/insurance. Roads around the town are generally in good condition but drive cautiously on rural stretches and be prepared for limited signage in English.
- Walking - Lankaran's central area is compact and pleasant to explore on foot - good for markets, the waterfront and nearby cafés. Walking is often the fastest way to cover short distances in the centre, and will help you discover local shops and eateries at your own pace.

Nightlife in Lankaran #
Lankaran’s evenings are low-key and local. The city is best known for its seaside promenade on the Caspian and its tea-houses-nights are about slow meals, strong tea and strolls on the boulevard rather than clubbing. Expect family-friendly restaurants, a few late cafés and seasonal seaside crowds in summer.
Practical tips: most places wind down around midnight, carry cash, dress conservatively outside resort spots, and stick to the central boulevard and market areas after dark for the busiest, safest options.
Shopping in Lankaran #
Lankaran’s shopping scene centers on fresh produce, tea and regional crafts rather than big malls. Expect lively bazaars where locally grown citrus, tea from nearby plantations and smoked fish are the bargains to seek - perfect for food-focused souvenir shopping. Bargain politely; vendors are used to haggling but expect fixed prices in modern stores. Walk the waterfront and the central bazaar for the most authentic finds.
