Langtang National Park
Park Highland park protecting Himalayan forests and endemic species
North of Kathmandu, Langtang National Park protects alpine valleys, rhododendron forests and peaks such as Langtang Lirung. Trekkers follow established trails, visit Tamang villages and seek high‑valley scenery at lower altitudes than Nepal’s highest massifs.
Langtang National Park is a protected mountain area north of Kathmandu that conserves Himalayan valleys, alpine meadows, glaciers and culturally distinct mountain villages. The park is a popular destination for multi-day treks into the Langtang Valley and to high viewpoints.
Treks pass through a series of settlements and terraces before rising into alpine tundra and glacial basins; small monastery settlements and cheese-producing hamlets appear in the upper valley. Visitors use teahouses and lodges along marked routes, with Kyanjin Gompa serving as a common high-altitude stop.
The park was established to protect high-mountain ecosystems and traditional mountain livelihoods and has been the subject of conservation and community-based tourism programmes. The 2015 earthquake caused notable damage in parts of the park, after which reconstruction and recovery efforts were undertaken.
Langtang National Park sits in north-central Nepal in the Himalayan foothills, north of Kathmandu in Bagmati Province. Access for trekkers is typically by road to entry villages followed by multi-day foot travel into the valley.
- 2015 earthquake impact: The park was heavily affected by the 2015 earthquake, with significant damage to villages and trekking infrastructure; rebuilding and recovery followed in subsequent years.
What to See #
- Langtang Valley: The Langtang Valley, a principal trekking corridor leading from lowland villages to alpine meadows and glacial basins.
- Kyanjin Gompa: Kyanjin Gompa, a high-altitude settlement with a small monastery and local guesthouses that serves as a common stop for treks in the upper valley.
- Alpine lakes and passes: Alpine lakes and high passes within the park that are reached on multi-day treks and offer views of glaciated peaks and ridges.
How to Get to Langtang National Park #
Langtang National Park is accessed from Kathmandu by road to the park gateway villages (most commonly Syabrubesi). Regular tourist jeeps and local buses run from Kathmandu north along the Trishuli/Dhunche mountain route; the drive to Syabrubesi is on steep, winding roads and typically takes most of a day (commonly quoted as 6-8 hours). Treks into the park begin at Syabrubesi village, where trailheads are a short walk from the village bus/jeep drop-off.
Tips for Visiting Langtang National Park #
- Plan treks in the clear seasons (spring and autumn) for the best mountain visibility and arrange required permits (Langtang National Park permit and TIMS) in Kathmandu or at the park office before heading to the Syabrubesi trailhead.
- Start hikes early in the day to avoid afternoon cloud build-up and to give yourself time for optional side climbs such as Kyanjin Ri-many trekkers skip these viewpoints but they reward you with superior panoramas.
- Allow extra acclimatization time and include Kyanjin village on your itinerary; visitors often miss local Tamang villages and small cheese/handicraft stalls around Kyanjin Gompa.
