Langara Island is the northernmost major island of Haida Gwaii, off the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada. It lies at roughly 54.2349°N, 133.0209°W and is one of the archipelago’s more remote islands.

The island is characterized by a rugged coastline, steep headlands and marine-exposed habitats that support significant seabird colonies and productive offshore fisheries. The northern tip includes a lightstation that is a local navigation landmark; visitors come for wildlife viewing, coastal hikes and sea-based access.

The island has long-standing connections with the Haida people, who used islands in the archipelago for seasonal activities; European-era uses have included lightstations, fisheries and occasional research visits. Modern use is primarily conservation, limited seasonal occupation and maritime navigation.

Langara sits at the northern end of Haida Gwaii, northwest of mainland British Columbia and north of Graham Island, in the North Pacific. Its remoteness makes it a destination typically reached by private boat, charter or specialized expedition vessels.

  • Access: The island is remote and sparsely populated, so access is normally by private boat or charter; there are no regular BC Ferries services to the island.

What to See #

  • Langara Lightstation: Located at the island's northern tip and functioning as the main navigation aid for ships in the surrounding waters; the lightstation is a prominent landmark on the island.
  • Seabird colonies: Important seabird habitat and breeding area on coastal cliffs and offshore islets, attracting birdwatchers and researchers interested in marine bird species.

How to Get to Langara Island #

Langara Island is extremely remote. Most visitors reach Haida Gwaii via ferry (BC Ferries) or air service to Sandspit (Haida Gwaii) or Prince Rupert on the mainland, then charter a floatplane or boat to Langara. Private charters and fishing operators in Prince Rupert or Sandspit can arrange transport; itineraries depend on weather and tide.

Tips for Visiting Langara Island #

  • Book a charter floatplane from Prince Rupert or Sandspit rather than relying on unpredictable private boats-sea conditions can turn quickly.
  • Bring binoculars and a field guide: Langara is famous for pelagic bird life and seasonal whale sightings; the best bird-watching is at the island's seacliffs.
  • Check with local search-and-rescue and floatplane operators for weather updates; fog and gales are common even in summer.

Best Time to Visit Langara Island #

Best visited in the brief summer window for wildlife and safer sea conditions; weather is the overriding factor year-round.

Summer
June-September · 8-15°C (46-59°F)
