Medieval hill castle in South Bohemia with a preserved Romanesque keep and stonework. Visitors climb towers, inspect reconstructed rooms and use the site as a base for countryside walks.
Landštejn Castle is a medieval hilltop castle ruin in the South Bohemian Region near the Czech-Austrian border. It is one of the larger surviving medieval fortifications in the area and is set on a rocky promontory above surrounding forested countryside.
The fortress originated in the Middle Ages as a frontier stronghold; its masonry, towers, and defensive walls reflect typical medieval military architecture. Today the site is preserved as a historic ruin with visitor access to parts of the complex and interpretive displays about its medieval role.
Historically the castle served as a regional administrative and military base for local noble families and changed hands several times during the medieval and early modern periods. Over time it fell partly into ruin but has been maintained as a cultural monument.
The site lies in rural South Bohemia near small villages and woodland, close to the Austrian border; the nearest local settlements provide the usual access routes for visitors arriving by road.
