Lamu Old Town

Lamu Old Town is a well-preserved Swahili trading town on Lamu Island, Kenya, notable for its continuous urban traditions, coral-stone buildings and narrow pedestrian lanes.

A compact maze of narrow streets and alleys lined with coral-stone houses, merchant compounds and small mosques illustrates Swahili urban form and domestic architecture; public squares and the waterfront punctuate the town plan. Lamu Fort and several historic mosques and residences provide concentrated points of interest documented in local museums and tours.

The town developed as a regional trading port on the East African coast, with cultural influences from Arab, Persian and inland African connections; its buildings and town plan evolved from medieval times and were adapted for maritime commerce and local social structures. The historic core has retained traditional building methods and urban patterns.

Lamu Old Town occupies a central position on Lamu Island off Kenya’s northeastern coast in the Indian Ocean; access is primarily by boat from the mainland or nearby islands.
