How to Get to Lamjung District#

Lamjung District is usually reached via Kathmandu (international) or Pokhara (domestic) with overland buses, tourist coaches or jeep transfers into the district. Many internal routes are served by road only, and travel times depend heavily on road conditions and weather.

By Air

Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu (KTM): Kathmandu is the main international gateway for Lamjung District. From KTM you can take a domestic flight to Pokhara (PKR) then continue by road, or travel overland directly by bus/jeep to the district; domestic flights are operated by Nepal Airlines, Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines.

Pokhara Airport (PKR): Pokhara is the closest airport with frequent domestic flights from Kathmandu (about 25-30 minutes). From Pokhara you continue by road to settlements in Lamjung District (several hours by bus or jeep depending on your final village).

By Train & Bus

Train: Nepal has no national passenger rail network linking Kathmandu or Pokhara to Lamjung; trains are not an option.

Bus: Direct buses and tourist/coaches run from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Besisahar (the administrative centre of Lamjung) and other local towns. Besisahar is a common gateway for treks into the district; bus journeys from Pokhara take around 2-4 hours and from Kathmandu 6-8+ hours depending on road conditions and traffic.

How to Get Around Lamjung District#

Lamjung is a road-based district reached via Kathmandu or Pokhara, then by bus, coach or jeep to Besisahar and onward to villages. Expect long or variable travel times and rely on local transport operators or organised transfers for final-mile access.

  • Domestic Flight (Kathmandu-Pokhara) (NPR 4,000-10,000 (one-way, approximate)) - Domestic airlines operate multiple daily flights between Kathmandu (KTM) and Pokhara (PKR), making Pokhara the fastest gateway to Lamjung. Flight time is short (~25-30 minutes) but expect variable schedules due to weather. From Pokhara you must continue by road to reach villages within Lamjung.
  • Bus / Tourist Coach (NPR 300-1,200 (approx.)) - Regular tourist and public buses run from Kathmandu and Pokhara to Besisahar and nearby towns; buses vary from basic local services to tourist coaches. Journey times are long (Kathmandu-Besisahar 6-9 hours, Pokhara-Besisahar 2-4 hours) and road quality can slow travel; book reputable operators for comfort.
  • Jeep / 4x4 transfer (NPR 1,500-6,000 (depends on distance and group size)) - For hard-to-reach villages or off-road sections, jeep transfers are common and sometimes essential, especially in monsoon or on unpaved roads. Jeeps are faster on rough sections but cost more and should be arranged through local agencies or guesthouses. Shared jeeps reduce per-person cost.
  • Local Bus / Microbus (NPR 50-300 per leg) - Local minibuses and shared jeeps serve short intra-district routes and are the cheapest option for residents and budget travellers. They are frequent but can be crowded and have limited luggage space; schedules are informal and changeable.
  • Hiking / Trekking (Varies (guide/porter fees)) - Many parts of Lamjung are explored on foot as part of multi-day treks; trails connect villages and offer access where vehicles cannot. Plan for basic accommodation in villages and variable trail conditions; hire a guide or porter if unfamiliar with local routes.
  • Walking - Villages and trailheads within Lamjung are best explored on foot; walking is essential for trekking and visiting remote hamlets. Prepare for significant elevation change and basic trail infrastructure.
