Lambsar Castle is a ruined medieval mountain fortress in the Alamut region of Qazvin province in northern Iran, known as one of the major strongholds of the Nizari Ismaili state. It occupies a high rocky ridge and is notable for extensive surviving masonry and defensive works.

The site contains large stretches of curtain wall, terraces and cisterns and is frequently visited for its archaeological remains and panoramic views; reaching the principal ruins involves steep mountain trails and basic on-site conditions.

Constructed and expanded by the Nizari Ismaili community during the medieval period, Lambsar served as a defensive and administrative centre within the network of Ismaili fortresses. It was one of the principal strongholds of the Nizari state in the 11th to 13th centuries and was abandoned and ruined following the Mongol campaigns of the mid-13th century.

The castle stands in the high Alborz mountains of the Alamut valley in Qazvin province, northeast of the city of Qazvin and above surrounding mountain roads and valleys.

• Access and facilities: Reaching the ruins requires a steep hike from the nearest mountain road; the site has limited facilities and no on-site visitor centre.
• Viewing tips: Best visited in dry seasons when mountain trails are firm; the ridge position gives wide views across the Alamut valley.

• Main citadel: The central stronghold with the main gate and surviving curtain walls; built on a rocky ridge to control approaches and offer commanding views of the valley.
• Lower walls and terraces: Lower terraces and defensive outworks that once contained storerooms and living quarters, connected to the citadel by steep paths and steps.
• Cisterns and waterworks: Stone-lined cisterns and water channels serving the fortress, visible among the ruins and important for the site’s historical self-sufficiency.

Access is typically from local roads in Qazvin province with a final approach on foot or by local track. Visitors should use regional guides or local transport options to confirm safe routes and seasonal accessibility.

• Bring sturdy footwear and water - the climb to the ruins is steep and exposed in places.
• Avoid the hottest hours in July-August; the castle sits high on a ridge and heat can be intense.
• Carry local currency for small offerings or snacks in the nearest villages; there are no services at the site.
