About Lake Vistonida#
Lake Vistonida is a coastal lagoon in northeastern Greece near the Thracian coast, characterised by shallow brackish water, reedbeds and small fishing settlements. It is an ecologically important wetland with a mix of freshwater and marine influences.
The lagoon is used for fishing and supports wetlands habitats that attract herons, flamingos and other waterbirds, and the shoreline includes fishing ports and small villages with piers and causeways. Visitors come to view birds, try local seafood and explore the coastal environment.
The lagoon lies in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, close to the Aegean coast and the town of Porto Lagos; it is separated from the open sea by a narrow coastal zone and is fed by small rivers and streams from the hinterland.
