Lake Velence
Lake Shallow Hungarian lake near Budapest with reedbeds
An hour from Budapest by train, Lake Velence offers shallow beaches, sailing and cycling routes; visitors combine day trips with local spas and birdwatching on reed-lined shores.
Lake Velence is a lowland freshwater lake in Fejér County, Hungary, lying on the Transdanubian Plain near the towns of Velence and Gárdony. It is one of Hungary’s most used recreational lakes and is noted for its relatively warm, shallow waters.
The lakeshore is developed with beaches, marinas, and facilities for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and angling, and there are built promenades and cycle routes along much of the shoreline. Reedbeds and wetland edges support waterbirds and make the lake popular with birdwatchers in spring and autumn.
The lake has long been used for salt extraction, fishing and recreation; shoreline settlements grew in the 19th and 20th centuries and modern tourism infrastructure expanded after World War II. Conservation measures have been introduced around reed and wetland areas to protect habitat for breeding and migratory birds.
Geographically the lake sits roughly midway between Budapest and Székesfehérvár on the eastern side of the Transdanubian Hills. The immediate landscape is a low, cultivated plain with small hills to the west and urban development at several points along the shore.
- Access: Sits between the towns of Velence and Gárdony and is served by regional road and rail links from Budapest and Székesfehérvár, making it one of the most accessible freshwater lakes in central Hungary.
- Best time to visit: Shallow, warm waters and long beaches make late spring through early autumn the best time for swimming and watersports.
