Lake Varese is a freshwater lake in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, situated north of Milan near the city of Varese. It is a relatively small lake within the pre-Alpine lake district and is used for local recreation and sports.
The lake is known for organized rowing facilities and for shore promenades and cycling routes that are popular with residents and visitors. Birdwatching is common in marshy zones at the lake edges and small towns and villages line parts of the shoreline.
The lake and its surroundings evolved with local agricultural use and small-scale settlement; in modern times recreational use and conservation of wetland habitats have become prominent. Infrastructure for rowing and outdoor activities expanded in the 20th century as the area developed tourism and sporting events.
Geographically the lake sits in the Lombardy pre-Alps north of Milan, close to the city of Varese and within easy driving distance of other major Lombardy lakes and towns.

By train: Varese station links to Milan (approx. 1 hour); from the station local buses and taxis reach lakeside towns (Gavirate, Bardello). By car: A8/A9 motorways to the Varese exits then follow signs to the lake; parking is available at main towns and at Sacro Monte.
Tips for Visiting Lake Varese#
- Cycle the dedicated path around the lake (about 20-25 km) for uninterrupted views-bike rentals are available in Varese.
- Visit the Sacro Monte di Varese for high viewpoint perspectives down to the lake-combine with a walk through the chapels.
- Early morning is the best time for birdwatching in the reedbeds at the southern end.
- Avoid the busiest weekend promenades by starting from Gavirate and heading north along the western shore.
