Lake Tamblingan
Lake Bali crater lake with ancient lakeside temples
Highland Bali’s Tamblingan sits among volcanic ridges and forest; tourists visit for temple shrines on its shores, village walks, and trekking through upland woodland.
Lake Tamblingan is a volcanic crater lake on the central-northern plateau of Bali, Indonesia. It is one of several crater lakes in the island’s upland region and sits within a forested volcanic caldera landscape.
The lake is visited for short hikes, boat trips across the water and to see traditional village temples on its shores; the setting is commonly combined with visits to nearby lakes and highland villages. Facilities are typically small-scale and oriented to local tourism.
The lake occupies a volcanic crater formed by past eruptions on Bali; the area around it has long-held local cultural significance with small temples and traditional settlements on the shoreline.
Geographically it lies in central-northern Bali, on the island’s upland plateau in Buleleng Regency, within driving distance of the Munduk area.

How to Get to Lake Tamblingan #
Munduk (a small hilltown) is the usual jumping‑off point: from Ubud or Denpasar, drive north along the main Buleleng routes and then take the narrow upland roads toward Munduk (roughly 2-3 hours from Denpasar depending on traffic). From Munduk, local guides and boatmen can arrange access to the lake and temple landings; some trails can also be reached on foot.
Tips for Visiting Lake Tamblingan #
- Hire a local boatman from nearby Munduk to reach the small shore temples - approach is part of the experience and some temples enforce dress and behavior rules.
- Go early in the morning to avoid both heat and tour groups from southern Bali; the mirror‑calm lake and temple incense make for memorable photos.
- Respect temple customs: cover shoulders and knees when stepping ashore at any temple sites.
