Lake Sary-Chelek is a high-altitude mountain lake in western Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad Region and forms the core of the Sary-Chelek protected area. It is one of the region’s most important natural lakes and a focal point for conservation and outdoor recreation.
The lake is encircled by forested ridges and alpine meadows and is accessed by trailheads used for multi-day treks and camping. It is valued for clear water, scenic mountain scenery and as habitat for regional flora and fauna.
The protected area was established to conserve the lake and surrounding ecosystems and has been managed for both conservation and sustainable visitor use. The lake and its valley have remained a relatively remote, low-impact destination compared with lowland tourist sites.
