Lake Rakshastal

Lake Rakshastal is a saline lake in western Tibet located just west of the freshwater Lake Manasarovar and near Mount Kailash. It is lower in religious significance for some traditions than nearby Manasarovar but forms part of the sacred landscape around Mount Kailash.

The lake’s shoreline, shallow salty waters and adjacent desert-like plains offer a stark contrast to the freshwater Manasarovar; local pilgrim routes and hermitages are present around the area. Visitors commonly view Rakshastal when travelling to the pair of lakes and to Mount Kailash.

Rakshastal occupies a high-altitude basin in the Tibetan Plateau and has long been part of regional religious narratives and pilgrimage routes connected to Mount Kailash. Its saline character contrasts with the freshwater lakes that attract ritual bathing.

The lake lies in Ngari Prefecture in western Tibet, immediately west of Lake Manasarovar and within the broader pilgrimage landscape surrounding Mount Kailash; the area is remote with limited infrastructure and is reached as part of overland pilgrimage or tour circuits.
